Polar Bear Alert

It comes as no surprise to me that I would live to see the day that the polar bear would be faced with the possibility of extinction. The polar ice cap's shockingly fast retreat since 1994 is a visceral wake up call to all skeptics of global climate change and it saddens me to see the plight of the polar bear and its habitat loss.

In 1994 I spent time on an icebreaker with Dr. Malcolm Ramsey and Shaun Farley, two marine mammal biologists who discovered that the polar bear dens well above 80 degrees north latitude. Permanent year round ice will soon be non existant within the next 40 years. Where are these northern bears to roam for seals?? I have seen footage of bears washed up on shore hundrends of miles away from sea ice drowned from exhaustion from swimming. Pushing the limits of its Latin name Ursus Maritumus meaning "maritime bear" or "sea bear".

To honour this truly remarkable animal, I will be releasing "Elder" as a limited edition print to raise funds for various conservation groups including World Wildlife Fund and Polar Bear International for education and field study programs.

Lanc Update

It took 3 years for Wilbur and Orville Wright to achieve their goal to successfully design the first air plane. The first manned flight was on December 17, 1903.

The weather was not particularly good for flying that morning in Kitty Hawk. However, Orville and Wilbur Wright were anxious to return to Dayton for Christmas. There were no more than a handfull of witnesses. But, on that day, Orville Wright first piloted a powered heavier-than-air machine.

The Wright Flyer had a 12-horsepower engine; a chain transmission, which drove two counter rotating propellers; skids like sled runners; flattened warpable wings; and a wingspan of just over 40 feet.

The first flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered almost 200 feet. Three more flights were made that day with the longest covering 852 feet.

Although the day itself went largely unnoticed at the time, it set the stage for revolutions in warfare, transportation, and commerce. It was a harbinger of things to come.

Much like the Wright brothers, the Lanc Project has had many ups and downs however after many attempts to create a worthy design for a 21st century composition of the Mynarski Avro Lancaster Bomber, a solid direction has finally been achieved. The painting is well underway and is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.

Ironic Art Theft

Ealier this year one of my paintings was stolen from the Hambleton Gallery in Kelowna BC. The thugs broke the glass of display window facing the street and took off with my painting titled "Opportunist". One cannot hold back a smirk when considering the title and the outcome. It was later found by the diligent efforts by the local R.C.M.P. and they retrieved the severly damaged original painting and made 2 arrests.

On Jan 21  2009, I was shocked to hear that Hambleton Galleries in Kelowna B.C., had been robbed in the early hours of the morning after thieves smashed a front window and stole two paintings, "Opportunist" and one by  fellow Canadian painter Carl Schlademan.  It was extremely disconcerting not knowing  the painting's whereabouts and if it was damaged or not but there seemed to be no leads in the early stages of the investigation.

See story:

On Feb. 6, I was both relieved and saddened when I was informed that although the painting had been found, it was thought to be irreparable. When the window of the gallery shattered, shards of glass created hundreds of scratch and cut marks on the surface of the painting, to restore it would be a huge undertaking.

My landscape painting art teacher in the Ontorio College of Art in the mid 80's was Franklin Arbuckle. http://www.mayberryfineart.com/artist/franklin_arbuckle.html
Franklin once told me that... "immitation is not the only highest form of flattery for an artist. Having your painting stolen in your lifetime is also a huge accolade!"

I will be restoring the painting for yet another adventure.
