It took 3 years for Wilbur and Orville Wright to achieve their goal to successfully design the first air plane. The first manned flight was on December 17, 1903.
The weather was not particularly good for flying that morning in Kitty Hawk. However, Orville and Wilbur Wright were anxious to return to Dayton for Christmas. There were no more than a handfull of witnesses. But, on that day, Orville Wright first piloted a powered heavier-than-air machine.
The Wright Flyer had a 12-horsepower engine; a chain transmission, which drove two counter rotating propellers; skids like sled runners; flattened warpable wings; and a wingspan of just over 40 feet.
The first flight lasted just 12 seconds and covered almost 200 feet. Three more flights were made that day with the longest covering 852 feet.
Although the day itself went largely unnoticed at the time, it set the stage for revolutions in warfare, transportation, and commerce. It was a harbinger of things to come.
Much like the Wright brothers, the Lanc Project has had many ups and downs however after many attempts to create a worthy design for a 21st century composition of the Mynarski Avro Lancaster Bomber, a solid direction has finally been achieved. The painting is well underway and is scheduled to be completed by October 2009.
