My friendship with Ken began with our involvement with the Arctic '94 expedition; the first scientific crossing of the Arctic Ocean transecting through the north pole in 1994. He planned and managed helicopter support for that historic expedition on which I had the privilege of serving as ship's artist for the 2 month voyage. We had a mutual friend who was a helicopter pilot on Arctic '94 by the name of Steve Hemphill. Steve and I became good friends during that time and when Steve died in a fateful helicopter crash a few years later, I produced a painting in his honour titled ' Monarch'. I hold a very high regard for individuals like Steve and Ken who risk so much to serve the public through their bravery and self sacrifice.

Ken's contribution to Canadian aviation is extensive. From 1999 to 2005, he was the Chief Pilot for Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard helicopter fleet. He was also the lead C.C.G. pilot for Swiss Air 111 Rescue and Recovery in September 1998. Ken was the lead Coast Guard pilot for the aerial security of the G7 held in Halifax in 1995. Ken's position as advisor for the organization of the helicopter sequences in James Cameron's Hollywood motion picture 'The Titanic' got him a credit in the movie. Ken is now flying as a corporate pilot for an international investment company.

'A Cappella' seemed an appropriate title for this painting of a bald eagle. I painted it from the context of how I imagine what it must be like to fly with diligence and confidence, a feat very few humans have experienced. I dedicate this painting to my friend and hero Ken Walsh who has always encouraged, supported and enriched my profession as an artist.

A special thanks to the Dempster family for supporting this project.
