"Since 1816, the technologies of reproducing images on paper have made remarkable leaps in evolution. Joseph Niecephore Niepce's (1765-1833) crude "Heliographic Process" which took days of exposure on a metal plate was replaced by Louis Daguerre's (1787-1851) "Daguerreotype" method involving a camera obscura and silver plates which only took a few minutes of exposure and was considered the first viable commercial method of photography dating back to 1839. In 1975, Bryce Bayer of Eastman Kodak developed the "Bayer filter mosaic pattern" for CCD colour imaging sensors which lead to the invention of Kodak's first-megapixel sensor in 1986. This changed the industry into a digital format and has revolutionized how we record images globally. I take the quality of my reproductions as seriously and as passionately as the paintings I create. THE PRINT HAS TO STAND UP TO THE ORIGINAL! "This is a portrait of Chief Michael Maqinna and Luna, the orphaned Orca that stayed in Nootka sound alone and apart from L- pod for nearly 5 years. The Mowachaht /Muchalaht First Nations believed that Luna or Tsu'xiit was the reincarnation of Michael's father, Ambrose Maquinna who promised he would return as a whale after his death. Ambrose died a few days before Tsu'xiit entered Nootka Sound. Luna died in 2006 from an encounter with the tugboat, General Jackson and was sucked into the boat's huge propellers and he succumbed to his injuries. I met Chief Michael Maquinna on the Luna Memorial Cruise on the Uchuck 2 where he agreed to have me paint a portrait of him and Tsu'xiit. Luna's spirit lives on in the hearts of the people of Gold River, Nootka Sound who were so deeply touched by this incredible whale."
